The Nationalist government in Taiwan adopted the name Republic of China (ROC) in 1949 after they lost the Chinese Civil War to the Communist Party and fled to Taiwan. This name has been used by Taiwan ever since, although the People's Republic of China (PRC) claims Taiwan as part of its territory and insists that Taiwan is merely a province of China. The National Republic of Taiwan and the National Republic of China are not commonly used names for Taiwan.
