M. paratuberculosis (M. avium subsp. paratuberculosis) is known to cause an inflammatory bowel disease referred to as Johne's disease in cattle, sheep, and goats. This organism was also isolated from the bowel mucosa of patients with Crohn's disease, a chronic inflammatory bowel disease of humans. Whether these and other mycobacteria actually contribute to development of Crohn's disease or are simply colonizing an environmental niche in the bowel of these patients remains to be elucidated.
