Any of a number of fungal culture media are satisfactory for use in the clinical microbiology laboratory. Most are adequate for the recovery of fungi, and selection is usually left up to each individual laboratory director. For optimal recovery, a battery of media should be used, including media with and without cycloheximide, and for specimens that are likely to contain contaminating bacteria, media with and without an antibacterial agent.
