Japan's imperialism began with the claim of the Ryukyu Islands from China in 1879. This was followed by the annexation of Taiwan from China in 1895 and the acquisition of parts of Sakhalin Islands from Russia in 1905. The Philippines and Malaya were not claimed by Japan until later in the early 20th century.
