Deficiency in ATT is inherited in an autosomal-codominant pattern in which two different versions of the ATT gene can be expressed together and contribute to the genetic trait. The most common allele, M, is associated with normal levels of ?-1 antitrypsin. Two different mutated alleles are known to exist, each of which confers varying degrees of disease risk. Most individuals have two copies (MM).
