Fabry disease is a lysosomal storage disease that is transmitted in an X-linked-recessive manner. It is caused by the inability to make the enzyme alpha-galactosidase A, which is needed so that people can metabolize lipids. Without this enzyme, fat metabolism is disordered, and fats accumulate, which increases the risk for strokes. Tay-Sachs disease and Hurler syndrome both result in childhood deaths from respiratory problems, and no association between either of them and stroke risk has been found. Gaucher disease is not associated with an increased risk for stroke.
