The hydrophobic part of the plasma membrane is the lipid bilayer, which is composed of two layers of phospholipids (part 3 in the figure). Part 2 represents the extracellular fluid, which is hydrophilic or water-loving. The transmembrane proteins (part 4) and peripheral membrane proteins (part 5) are embedded in or attached to the lipid bilayer. Part 6 represents the cytoplasm, which is also hydrophilic.
