Each electron carrier in the chain alternates between being reduced and being oxidized. As the electrons move down the chain, they lose energy, which is used to pump protons out of the mitochondrial matrix into the intermembrane space, creating an electrochemical gradient that drives ATP synthesis through chemiosmosis. ATP is not generated at each step, and the energy of the electrons does not increase at each step. Molecules in the chain do give up some of their potential energy, but this is not the primary process occurring along the chain.
