The triad in skeletal muscle consists of a transverse tubule (T-tubule) and two terminal cisternae of the sarcoplasmic reticulum. The T-tubule is invaginated into the muscle fiber and runs perpendicular to the myofibrils, while the terminal cisternae are enlarged areas of the sarcoplasmic reticulum on either side of the T-tubule.
