The individual with McArdle disease is not able to break down glycogen or produce lactic acid. Individuals with CPT deficiency have mild muscular symptoms but can experience bouts of renal failure caused by myoglobinuria. Rhabdomyolysis and myoglobinuria are often caused by sedatives and narcotics, particularly street heroin, clofibrate (a hypolipidemic agent), and the antifibrinolytic aminocaproic acid. Drugs that induce hypokalemia, such as amphotericin B, licorice, and azathioprine, also have been reported to cause myalgia and myopathy.
