During a primary immune response, nonspecific immunity (such as phagocytosis and inflammation) may be of great benefit to the organism until the specific immune response (using antibodies and T cells) can be generated. Antibodies are not immediately made, as it takes time for B cells to differentiate into plasma cells that can produce antibodies. The primary immune response occurs when the immune system encounters a pathogen for the first time and memory cells are produced during this response for future protection. The production of memory cells is not blocked during a primary immune response.
