The lungs are the site of gas exchange between the air we breathe in and the blood in our body. Oxygen from the air diffuses into the blood in the lungs, while carbon dioxide (a waste product of cellular respiration) diffuses out of the blood into the air. Low oxygen levels in the lungs (for example, due to high altitude, lung disease, or holding one's breath) trigger vasoconstriction in order to divert blood flow to areas of the lung with higher oxygen levels. Conversely, high oxygen levels in the lungs (such as when breathing in deeply or being on supplemental oxygen) trigger vasodilation to increase blood flow to the lungs and improve oxygen exchange.
