Nixon repeatedly stated that his goal was to achieve "peace with honor" in Vietnam, meaning that he wanted to end the war in a way that would not be perceived as a defeat for the United States. Although he eventually pursued a strategy of Vietnamization, whereby American troops were gradually withdrawn while South Vietnamese forces took over the fighting, Nixon still hoped to negotiate a settlement that would preserve a non-Communist South Vietnam. He ultimately signed the Paris Peace Accords in 1973, which provided for a ceasefire and a political settlement that left the Vietcong in control of significant territory but maintained the existence of South Vietnam as a separate state.
