Cladistics is an approach to classification based upon an analysis of recently and distantly evolved features, known as derived characters or synapomorphies. These derived characters are used to establish the relationships between organisms and construct evolutionary trees called cladograms. This approach is based on the assumption that organisms sharing a greater number of derived characters are more closely related than those sharing fewer derived characters.
