GDP measures the total value of goods and services produced in a country's economy. However, it does not take into account how that production is distributed among the population or the quality of goods and services produced. For example, GDP would still increase even if a dollar were spent on pollution control measures to address damage already done by pollution. Additionally, it treats all spending the same, regardless of its social value. For instance, a dollar spent on national defense is treated identically to a dollar spent on education, when the latter is arguably more beneficial for the population.
