Prior to being established as the colony of North Carolina, the region was referred to as Albemarle County after George Monck, 1st Duke of Albemarle, who was one of the eight Lords Proprietors who received the grant to settle the area from King Charles II. The region was sparsely populated by Native American tribes, as well as some European settlers, primarily from Virginia and other nearby colonies. However, the majority of the population was made up of African slaves and indentured servants who were brought to the area to work on tobacco plantations. Transylvania, Kentucky, Florida, and Mississippi were not a part of North Carolina during this time period.
