When CO₂ is removed by the respiratory system, it combines with water in the blood to form carbonic acid (H₂CO₃), which then dissociates into bicarbonate ions (HCO₃⁻) and hydrogen ions (H⁺). The increase in bicarbonate ions causes the pH of the blood to become more alkaline (basic) and therefore raises the pH of the blood.
