Milgram's famous obedience studies found that most people (around 65%) were willing to administer a potentially fatal shock to another person when instructed to do so by an authority figure in a lab setting. The shocks went up to 450 volts and were not actually administered, but the participants believed they were. Milgram also found that people tended to overestimate how much resistance others would show to authority, thinking that most people would obey to the same extent that they themselves did.
