Windows operating systems from Windows 95 onwards were based on a hybrid kernel which combined features of the older Windows NT kernel and the MS-DOS kernel. However, starting with Windows Vista, the operating system uses a completely different kernel architecture called Windows NT Kernel, rendering the need for the DOS kernel unnecessary.
