The abolitionists of the 1830s were an active and influential minority within the reform movements of the era. They did not all belong to the Quaker faith, nor did they advocate for a bloody civil war. They opposed the admission of Texas as a slave state, and while they did not persuade the majority of northern citizens to oppose slavery, they did contribute to the growing anti-slavery sentiment in the North leading up to the Civil War.
