Granger Laws were state laws passed in the late 1800s that created state railroad commissions to regulate the rates and charges of railroads and warehouses. The laws were aimed at protecting farmers and consumers from unfair shipping and storage fees. The laws did not destroy the Patrons of Husbandry but rather were supported by the group. The laws did not regulate farm cooperatives or land banks, nor did they lead directly to the creation of the Populist party. While some aspects of the Granger Laws were overturned by the Supreme Court, they did go into effect in the late 1800s and were an important precursor to later federal regulations of transportation and commerce.
