Despite some efforts of the New Deal to improve racial equality, African Americans continued to face discrimination and disfranchisement. This was due, in part, to the influence of Southern Democrats in Congress who opposed measures that would enhance the rights of black Americans. Additionally, many of the New Deal programs and agencies were administered at the state and local levels, where segregation and racial prejudice were deeply ingrained. As a result, African Americans often received fewer benefits and faced greater barriers to participation in New Deal programs than white Americans.
