Southeastern and border states tend to have lower cigarette taxes as these regions have a higher prevalence of smoking and a stronger tobacco industry presence. New England states have some of the highest cigarette taxes in the country. There is no evidence to suggest that cigarette taxes are affected by weekends. While states without tobacco farming may have less of a vested interest in keeping taxes low, this factor alone is not determinative of cigarette tax rates. States with low levels of smokers may not see as much revenue from cigarette taxes and may also not have as much political will to increase taxes, but this factor alone is not determinative either.
