PCA is a method by which patients can self-administer a predetermined intravenous bolus of an opioid at a set interval.PCA avoids the delay in getting a dose requested from and later delivered by a nurse.More total analgesia drug is needed if pain is allowed to intensify between drug doses.It is more effective to keep control of pain than to regain control of it.Continuous administration of a background opioid rate also may help with this problem.Patients using PCA for postoperative pain use less total opioid and report subjectively less pain than patients receiving scheduled or as-needed opioids delivered by nurses.
