The Byzantine Empire, in contrast, was a Christian empire that existed prior to the Ottoman Empire, and was conquered by the Ottomans in 1453. The Ottoman Empire had no relation to Shi'a Islam, and is not a remnant of its former self in modern day Iran, which is a predominantly Shi'a Muslim country.
