Pseudoparkinsonism, which is a condition resembling Parkinson's disease, is a common side effect of older antipsychotics but is less common with newer ones. Newer antipsychotics have a lower affinity for dopamine receptors in the nigrostriatal pathway, which is responsible for motor function, and therefore have a lower risk of causing extrapyramidal symptoms such as pseudoparkinsonism. Positive symptoms, lag period, and MAO inhibition are not side effects commonly associated with antipsychotic medications.
