At any one time, a few hundred supergranules exist and cover a few percent of the chromosphere. Supergranules are large-scale convective cells that are typically around 30,000 km in diameter and last for approximately 24 hours. They form due to the motion of the plasma beneath the photosphere and extend into the chromosphere, where they can be seen as bright structures in ultraviolet and visible light images. However, they do not completely cover the chromosphere.
