While there have been various estimates of the amount of oil in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, it is not enough to meet current world oil demand for 50 years. The U.S. Geological Survey estimated in 1998 that there were between 5.7 and 16.0 billion barrels of technically recoverable oil in the 1002 area of the refuge. Current world oil demand is around 100 million barrels per day, which means that even if the Refuge contained the highest estimate of 16 billion barrels, that oil would only meet current world demand for around 160 days.
