Most inherited human disorders are caused by recessive mutations of genes located on autosomes. Autosomal recessive disorders require inheritance of two copies of the mutated gene (one from each parent) to cause the disorder. This is why the disorders are more likely to occur in individuals from consanguineous marriages (where both parents are related and potentially carriers of the same mutated gene). Dominant mutations of genes located on the X chromosome can also cause inherited disorders but are less prevalent. Recessive mutations of genes located on the Y chromosome are much rarer and only affect males because they only have one copy of the Y chromosome.
