Japan was the only country that was closed off from the rest of the world until 1867. This policy of seclusion was called Sakoku and was implemented in the 17th century. It restricted foreign contact and trade to a small number of Dutch and Chinese traders on the small island of Dejima in Nagasaki Bay. It was only in 1853 that the United States under Commodore Matthew Perry forced Japan to open to the outside world with the Treaty of Kanagawa in 1854.
