A heterozygous person carries one dominant allele and one recessive allele for a trait. The dominant allele will always be expressed, but the recessive allele will only be expressed if the person inherits two copies of it (one from each parent). Therefore, a heterozygous person may not express the recessive trait themselves, but they can still pass it on to their children. This makes them a carrier of the trait.
