CASE HISTORY
Kimiko,a six-year-old girl from Shodo Island,in Japan, had a four-day history of fever, severe abdominal pain, and loose stools. She was diagnosed with appendicitis, but an exploratory laparotomy found a healthy appendix. She responded well to tetracycline antibiotic therapy. The doctors finally concluded she had enteritis (intestinal inflammation).Bacteriological examination of her stool eventually recovered Yersinia pseudotuberculosis,an occasional cause of enteritis. The organism, which is transmitted by ingesting contaminated food or water, was found in the family's well water and in the stool of animals found on their property.
