Flukes lodging in the heart and brain causing disease is not a feature of schistosomiasis. Schistosomiasis is caused by a parasitic infection with Schistosoma species that enter the body through the skin when humans wade in snail-infested waters. The larvae (cercariae) migrate through various tissues and organs, eventually settling in the blood vessels of the liver, intestine or bladder, where they lay eggs that can cause allergic reactions and liver cirrhosis. Dermatitis from the cercariae is also a common feature of infection.
