While all of the Five Civilized Tribes faced pressure to remove from their ancestral lands in the southeastern United States, the Seminoles put up the strongest resistance. Led by the fierce warrior Osceola, the Seminoles waged a prolonged guerrilla war against the U.S. government, earning the conflict the nickname "The Seminole Wars." While most of the Seminoles were eventually forced to relocate to Indian Territory (present-day Oklahoma), a significant number managed to evade capture and remain in Florida, where they eventually gained official recognition as a tribe in the 20th century.
