Brown v. Board of Education (1954) ruled that segregation in public schools violated the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment and therefore outlawed de jure segregation (segregation by law). It did not address de facto segregation (segregation that occurs without explicit or intentional segregation) which continued to be a problem in many parts of the country. The Court did not allow for desegregation on a case-by-case basis, but rather ordered schools to desegregate "with all deliberate speed." The Court also explicitly rejected the "separate but equal" doctrine established in Plessy v. Ferguson (1896).
