Night terrors usually occur during non-REM sleep, specifically during Stage 3 or 4. They are different from nightmares which occur during REM sleep. Night terrors are more common in children, although adults can also experience them. Sleep apnea is a separate sleep disorder that can cause disruptions in breathing during sleep and is not directly related to night terrors. Night terrors can occur at any time during the night, not just within an hour of falling asleep.
