Voltaire believed that religious toleration would help to end the conflicts within Christianity, as he saw the intolerance between various Christian sects as a major contributor to the religious violence and wars throughout history. While religious toleration was not the primary concern of all of the philosophes, many advocated for it as a basic principle of human rights and the protection of individual conscience. It was not immediately implemented by monarchs in Europe, as there was resistance from traditional religious authorities and societal prejudices. Voltaire himself was a proponent of religious toleration and considered it a key component of a just and enlightened society.
