If the film edge extends beyond the incisal-occlusal surfaces of the teeth by more than 1/8 inch, the apices may not appear on the radiograph. Therefore, making certain that no more than 1/8 inch of the film edge extends beyond the incisal-occlusal surfaces of the teeth would be the best choice. Increasing the exposure time may result in overexposure and unnecessary radiation exposure. Directing the x-ray beam through the interproximal spaces may not provide an accurate depiction of the apices.
