Tecumseh believed that Indian tribal unity was the only effective means to resist white settlers. He founded a confederacy of tribes to unite and resist American expansion in the early 19th century. He fought against American forces led by William Henry Harrison at the Battle of Tippecanoe, but was eventually defeated and killed in the War of 1812. He did not encourage Indian assimilation into the United States and did not have a brother known as "the Shooting Star." While he did have struggles with alcoholism, there is no record of a mystical awakening associated with his recovery.
