River blindness, also known as onchocerciasis, is a disease caused by a parasitic helminth worm called Onchocerca volvulus. The larvae of the worm are transmitted to humans through the bites of infected black flies. Over time, the worms can cause severe itching, skin lesions, and eventually blindness if left untreated. There is no vaccine currently available to prevent river blindness.
