Dehydration of the cell components actually occurs during the formation of the endospore, not during germination. During germination, the endospore absorbs water and proteins, causing swelling and breaking of the outer coat. Enzymes then digest the endospore cortex, releasing the cell and allowing it to grow out of the protein coats. Some endospores also require binding of a small organic molecule or nutrient to initiate germination.
