Hypothyroidism is a condition in which the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormone. In response, the pituitary gland secretes more thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) to try and stimulate the thyroid gland to produce more thyroid hormone. Therefore, an increased level of TSH would be expected in a patient with hypothyroidism. Increased levels of triiodothyronine or thyroxine (A and B) would indicate hyperthyroidism. Increased calcitonin (D) is not directly related to thyroid function and is more commonly associated with certain types of thyroid cancer.
