Scalded-skin syndrome is caused by virulent group II staphylococci, which produce an exfoliative toxin that attacks desmoglein and adhesion molecules and causes a separation of the skin just below the granular layer of the epidermis. The toxins are usually produced at body sites other than the skin and arrive at the epidermis through the circulatory system. Staphylococci typically are not found in the skin lesions themselves.
