If both parents are carriers of PKU, they each have one normal and one mutated gene. When they have children, there is a 25% chance that the child will inherit two copies of the mutated gene and have PKU, a 50% chance that the child will inherit one mutated gene and be a carrier like the parents, and a 25% chance that the child will inherit two normal genes and not have the disorder or be a carrier.
