Cytotoxic T cells (also known as CD8+ T cells) identify and kill cells that have been infected with a virus. They do this by recognizing and binding to viral antigens presented on the surface of infected cells. Once the T cell recognizes its target, it releases cytotoxic molecules that cause cell death.
