War communism was a policy implemented by the Bolsheviks during the Russian Civil War in 1918-1921. It involved the nationalization of industry and the requisitioning of grain and other food supplies from peasants to feed the Red Army and urban workers. While some elements of war communism had been proposed by Lenin before the revolution, the policy itself was largely unplanned and driven by the exigencies of war. It was often harsh and unpopular, leading to widespread famine and economic devastation.
