The citric acid cycle, also known as the Krebs cycle, produces ATP, NADH, and FADH2. The cycle starts with acetyl CoA and results in the release of carbon dioxide, NADH and FADH2. These products are then used in the electron transport chain to produce more ATP. Pyruvate is produced during glycolysis, a separate process that occurs prior to the citric acid cycle. Oxygen is required for the electron transport chain, but is not directly produced during the citric acid cycle. A proton gradient is also produced during the electron transport chain, but not during the citric acid cycle itself.
