Macrophages do not appear first in early inflammation. The first response is typically brief vasoconstriction followed by vasodilation, which causes capillaries to become more permeable and allows blood cells and plasma to leave the blood vessel and accumulate in the tissues. Chemical mediators and cytokines are released in response to the injury or infection, which attract immune cells such as neutrophils and macrophages to the site of inflammation. These immune cells begin phagocytosis of foreign substances and produce more chemical mediators to further promote inflammation.
