Queer theory challenges the idea that sexual life can be conveniently summarized by placing individuals into identifiable categories based on their sexual orientation. It suggests that these categorizations are socially constructed and serve to reinforce heteronormativity, which in turn privileges heterosexual individuals and relationships while marginalizing and oppressing those who fall outside the norm. It is not based on science or put forth by homophobic activists, and it does not place sexual activities into a sharp split between homosexual and heterosexual.
