Hemoglobin F contains two alpha and two gamma chains, unlike hemoglobin A which contains two alpha and two beta chains. This structural difference gives hemoglobin F a higher affinity for oxygen, allowing for greater oxygen uptake in fetal circulation. Hemoglobin F also does not bind as much 2,3-DPG as hemoglobin A, which further increases its oxygen affinity. Hemoglobin F levels decrease after birth and are typically replaced by hemoglobin A.
